AceShowbiz - Bob the Drag Queen shared her excitement following her debut performance in Broadway's Moulin Rouge! The Musical on January 27. “My blood was just pumped,” she revealed to Billboard, attributing her high energy to an abundance of Red Bull.
Despite her extensive experience in performing arts, stepping into the extravagant role of Harold Zidler marks Bob's first official venture on the Broadway stage. This milestone comes over 15 years after she first arrived in New York City, navigating the competitive audition circuit alongside other aspiring performers.
Reflecting on her diverse career, Bob expressed gratitude for the support she has received throughout her journey. “I’ve been on a lot of wacky journeys, from reality TV to books to music to Broadway to stand-up, and I’ve had a lot of people go with me on every single journey,” she noted. Bob gained fame as the winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 8 and has recently served as the MC for Madonna’s global Celebration Tour from 2023 to 2024.
In an exclusive conversation with Billboard, Bob discussed her unique approach to auditioning for the role of Zidler, her path to Broadway, and the potential future roles that could suit her on the Great White Way.
Billboard: You’re no stranger to the stage, but did you feel different nerves given this was a theatrical setting?
Bob: Not really. I’ve been acting for quite a while and have participated in numerous plays—not as many as seasoned Broadway actors, though. The last significant play I did was Angels in America eight years ago. I tend to feel more excitement than nerves.
Billboard: Do you have any pre-show rituals?
Bob: I usually listen to video essays or podcasts while I do my makeup and chat with the crew backstage. I also do vocal warm-ups, but nothing too spiritual or ritualistic.
Billboard: While you have released music before, how confident do you feel about singing live eight times a week? That’s quite a commitment.
Bob: I genuinely enjoy singing. I've performed live and professionally multiple times, but this is definitely more than I’ve ever done. It’s outside my usual realm, but I find it incredibly thrilling.
Billboard: Were you able to rehearse with your castmates before your big debut?
Bob: Not really. It was mostly a solo venture for me. We did one “put in” show, which is a rehearsal where not everyone is in costume and the full band isn’t present—just the piano and no audience. That was the closest experience I had to performing the whole show before the official debut.
As Bob the Drag Queen continues to make her mark on Broadway, fans eagerly anticipate what this talented performer will take on next.
