This pressure compounded when Emmerich expressed a desire to cast Heath Ledger in a pivotal role, a thought that did not sit well with Gibson.

“The first problem I had was that I wanted Heath Ledger instead of another actor,” Emmerich said. He described how he had to call Gibson to communicate his preference. “I naturally had to call [Mel] and say, ‘I kind of like the other guy.’ Then he said, ‘Well you’re the director.’ And hangs up on me. True story.”
