AceShowbiz - Meg 2: The Trench is making waves on streaming platforms as fans eagerly await news of a potential trilogy. Following the success of 2018's The Meg, the action-packed sequel released in August 2023, directed by Ben Wheatley, is now becoming a hit on streaming services.
After three years, Meg 2: The Trench is currently the eighth most popular film on Prime Video in the U.S. It has surpassed titles like Year 10 (2024) and The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023), though it trails behind classics such as He's Just Not That Into You (2009) and A Cinderella Story (2004). Leading the pack is Kung Fu Panda 4 (2024).
The original The Meg was a massive success, grossing over $529 million globally under the direction of Jon Turteltaub. This success motivated Jason Statham to reprise his role as diver Jonas Taylor in the sequel, where he encounters multiple fearsome megalodon sharks and other terrifying creatures that elevate the stakes.
Despite the excitement surrounding it, reviews for Meg 2 were not as favorable as those for its predecessor, earning only a 27% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The original film had a slightly better reception, with a critics' score of 47%. However, audience response was notably more positive, with the sequel amassing over $398 million at the box office against a budget of around $129 million. While it fell short of the first film's financial heights, it was still a significant success for Warner Bros..
The performance of Meg 2 could pave the way for a third installment in the franchise. Although there has been no official announcement regarding a sequel, Ben Wheatley hinted at the possibility in a July 2023 interview with Total Film (via GamesRadar+), stating, “There's a lot more to explore in that world. It's very rich. The international-ness of it is very interesting.”
As the franchise continues to gain traction on streaming platforms, fans remain hopeful for further adventures in the Meg universe.
