AceShowbiz - For a decade, from the mid-2000s to the mid-2010s, ABC cultivated unique, creative, and bold television series that, despite their brilliance, were often prematurely cancelled. Shows like Pushing Daisies, Selfie, Don't Trust the B — in Apartment 23, and Kevin From Work became cult classics, celebrated by devoted fans but largely unknown. These hidden gems, though tragically short-lived, remain rewarding. Among these underrated treasures is the 2015 musical comedy series, Galavant, from Dan Fogelman, known for hits like This Is Us and Paradise.
Set in a charmingly anachronistic historical fantasy world, Galavant is pure joy. It’s perfectly tailored for those who cherish the whimsical humor of The Princess Bride, the irreverent wit of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, or the enchanting narrative of Ella Enchanted. Despite its immense charm and clever writing, Galavant was sadly cancelled after just two seasons. However, nearly a decade later, its enduring appeal makes it an excellent binge-watch, with every episode delivering delight.
The series introduces us to the celebrated knight Galavant (Joshua Sasse), happily in love with Madalena (Mallory Jansen). Their bliss is shattered when the nefarious King Richard (Timothy Omundson) abducts her, intending to make her his queen. Galavant bravely interrupts the wedding, only for Madalena to deliver a hilarious twist: she chooses power and riches, marrying King Richard and leaving Galavant utterly devastated.
A year later, a heartbroken Galavant is a shadow of his former self, languishing in bed with only his loyal squire, Sid (Luke Youngblood), for company. This melancholy is interrupted by Princess Isabella (Karen David) of Valencia, who seeks Galavant’s help to free her kingdom from the tyrannical King Richard.
Isabella explains her family was murdered and her kingdom overthrown for refusing to surrender a prized jewel to King Richard. Initially reluctant, Galavant’s resolve crumbles when he learns King Richard is behind it all. The plot, however, holds a deeper twist: King Richard hadn’t killed Isabella’s parents. Instead, he blackmailed her, threatening their lives unless she enlisted Galavant to save her kingdom from him – a clever ruse designed for reasons yet unknown, setting the stage for an epic and hilarious adventure.
