AceShowbiz - Filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg, known for his consistent critical successes like 10 Cloverfield Lane and Prey, continues his impressive streak with the highly anticipated `Predator: Badlands`. This new installment, which he co-conceived with Patrick Aison, boldly reinvents the long-running Predator franchise, now entering its ninth film.
In a significant departure, Trachtenberg transforms the iconic Yautja, colloquially known as the Predator, into a protagonist. The story centers on Dek (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi), a Yautja outcast, who embarks on an unsanctioned hunt on Genna, the universe's most perilous planet. His quest for a mythical beast leads him to Thia (Elle Fanning), a Weyland-Yutani synthetic, who despite being "light on legs" is "heavy on words." Through a unique alliance, Thia becomes an unexpected aid in Dek's desperate bid for redemption.
To realize the otherworldly atmosphere of Genna, Trachtenberg chose New Zealand as his filming location. During pre-production, he received an intriguing invitation from a fellow director at 20th Century Studios: James Cameron. Residing and working out of Wellington, New Zealand, Cameron, the visionary behind classics like Aliens (a sister franchise to Predator), presented an invaluable opportunity for advice. Trachtenberg undertook an eight-hour drive to visit Cameron at his studio, where work on Avatar: Fire and Ash was underway.
It was in Cameron's editing room that Trachtenberg detailed his ambitious vision for Predator: Badlands. While the full conversation unfolded over dinner, Trachtenberg later revealed that Cameron initially harbored skepticism about the concept. The legendary director, according to Trachtenberg, "didn’t think [the movie] was going to work" until he had the chance to view a nearly finished cut of Predator: Badlands. This initial doubt, eventually overcome by the film's execution, underscores the innovative and challenging nature of Trachtenberg's new direction for the beloved sci-fi series.
