AceShowbiz - Who knew a music festival could host more drama than a reality TV show? The playful feud between Green Day and Charli XCX at this year's Coachella has become the buzz of the internet and has fans talking.
It all started during the festival's opening weekend in Indio, Calif., when Charli XCX was seen at an afterparty sporting a sash that read "Miss Should Be Headliner." This cheeky statement was widely interpreted on social media as a playful jab at the veteran rockers Green Day, who had headlined just before her set on April 12.
Charli's tongue-in-cheek dig didn't go unnoticed by Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong. During their closing set on the second weekend of the festival, the vocalist made sure to return the jest in style.
He took the stage wearing a neon green baseball cap emblazoned with the word "Brat" - a clear reference to Charli XCX's 2024 album of the same name. Not to be outdone, Green Day drummer Tre Cool was also seen backstage with a handmade white sash that read "Actual Headliner," adding an extra layer to the on-stage banter.
The back-and-forth continued online with Charli XCX reacting on social media, commenting "obsessed" on a photo of Tre Cool's sash.
While the artists themselves seemed to take the banter in stride, the same can't be said for their fanbases. Green Day's loyal followers were quick to defend their idols, taking to social media to criticize Charli's statement and vice versa.
However, Green Day's performance was far from playful. During both weekends of Coachella, Armstrong got political and chose to tweak the lyrics of their iconic song "Jesus of Suburbia" to reflect current events, including the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict and a criticism aimed at Vice President J.D. Vance.
"Runnin' away from pain like the kids from Palestine/ Tales from another broken home" and "Am I (stupid) or am I just J.D. Vance?" were some of the lines that made headlines, showcasing Green Day's commitment to addressing real-world issues.
"green day making a political statement about s*** that actually matters > pop girlies singing about coke," a fan dissed Charli XCX. In contrast, another criticized Charli XCX by stating, "Charli xcx letting hype get to her head. Green Day used their Coachella headliner slot to speak up for good. They are still bigger than her."
As Coachella 2025 comes to a close, with standout performances by Post Malone, Travis Scott (II), Megan Thee Stallion, JENNIE, Zedd, and Kraftwerk, it's clear that the festival not only delivered musically but also provided plenty of backstage drama to keep fans engaged.
