AceShowbiz - Director Christopher Landon opened up about his departure from directing the highly anticipated "Scream 7" in a recent interview with Vanity Fair.
His decision came in the wake of actress Melissa Barrera's firing over her social media posts supporting Palestinians in the Gaza conflict. The studio's drastic action led to a cascade of events that turned Landon's dream job into a harrowing ordeal.
Barrera, who had been a mainstay in the franchise, was abruptly dismissed in November 2023 by Spyglass Media Group. In her absence, Jenna Ortega also exited, citing the fallout and instability surrounding the project.
Landon revealed he started receiving "highly aggressive and really scary" death threats following Barrera's dismissal. He recounted, "I got messages saying, 'I'm going to find your kids, and I'm going to kill them because you support child murder.' " The threats were so severe that the head of security at various studios and the FBI had to intervene.
Despite the backlash, Landon clarified he played no role in Barrera's firing. "I did not fire her. A lot of people think I had something to do with it, and it was not my doing. I had no control of the situation at all," he reiterated.
Landon initially joined "Scream 7" in August 2023, marking what he described as a full-circle moment in his career. However, Barrera's departure and the hostile fan reactions quickly soured the experience.
"The hate and abuse really spoiled it for me, and I lost my love for the idea of going forward," Landon confessed. He later announced his resignation in December 2023, stating, "In the midst of all the chaos, I was grieving the loss of one of my dream jobs."
Jenna Ortega supported this claim in a previous interview with The Cut. "It had nothing to do with pay or scheduling," she explained her departure. "The Melissa stuff was happening, and it was all kind of falling apart."
Meanwhile, the franchise has moved forward with Kevin Williamson, its original writer, stepping in as the new director. Neve Campbell, a franchise icon, will be returning for the seventh installment.
