AceShowbiz - With "The Accountant 2" inching closer to theatres, fans are eagerly anticipating more of Ben Affleck's portrayal of the complex character, Christian Wolff. In a recent conversation at SXSW, the movie's director, Gavin O'Connor, opened up plans for more movie.
The filmmaker confirmed the story won't conclude with the upcoming sequel. Rather, "The Accountant 2" is the middle chapter of a trilogy that has been carefully mapped out since the early days of the first movie's post-production.
O'Connor's journey with "The Accountant" began when he joined forces with screenwriter Bill Dubuque. Reflecting on their collaboration, O'Connor shared, "There's always been three. Since post-production, since I started editing the first one."
"I didn't know Bill [Dubuque]. We met on the first movie. I got the script from Lynette Howell Taylor, and then from the script that I initially got, I started working with Bill. I think any filmmaker's going to do it. You get a script, you respond to it. How does it affect you personally? But then you keep climbing inside of it. It becomes your own aesthetic and sensibility."
O'Connor stressed that their vision grew organically from their partnership on the first film. "Bill was a great partner in allowing me to start taking it in directions. Once we started working together, and we became really good friends - I love Bill. He's just the greatest," he noted.
Their discussions naturally evolved into planning a trilogy, with O'Connor recalling, "We should be doing three of these, so what's the interstitial movie? Which is two, which is now, exactly what we talked about. And we have three."
As "The Accountant 2" prepares for its theatrical release on April 25, 2025, O'Connor and Dubuque are already laying the groundwork for the final installment. While specific details remain under wraps, O'Connor hinted that the storyline for "The Accountant 3" is actively being developed.
"We've been now kicking the tires on what that story is. So, we'll be doing that next," he confirmed, assuring fans that the wait for the trilogy's conclusion will not stretch to another eight years.
The sequel promises to delve deeper into the tumultuous brotherly relationship between Christian Wolff and Jon Bernthal's Braxton, adding an intriguing dynamic for audiences to ponder over until the third film's arrival. With these developments, "The Accountant" trilogy is primed to offer thrilling continuity and closure that fans will undoubtedly celebrate.
