AceShowbiz - The 2025 BAFTA Film Awards nominations, announced live in London by Mia McKenna-Bruce and Will Sharpe, highlight a wonderfully diverse array of films and performances. Topping the list is the thriller "Conclave," which received 12 nominations, including Best Film, Best Director (Edward Berger), and Lead Actor (Ralph Fiennes).
The thriller about pope election narrowly edged out the musical "Emilia Perez," which garnered 11 nods, including Best Film, Best Director (Jacques Audiard), and Lead Actress (Karla Sofia Gascon).
"The Brutalist," clocking in at 215 minutes, secured nine nominations and joined the Best Film race along with the comedy/drama "Anora," the sci-fi spectacle "Dune: Part Two," and the biopic "A Complete Unknown," each demonstrating a wide range of genres represented.
The British Academy praised this variety, with Chair Sara Putt emphasizing the breadth of creative expression evident among the nominees.
First-time nominees were also a key highlight of this year's selections. In acting categories, 14 out of 24 nominations were first-timers, including rising star Gascon for "Emilia Perez," alongside established stars like Timothee Chalamet for "A Complete Unknown."
The Best Director category too saw first-time nominees such as Sean Baker for "Anora," Brady Corbet for "The Brutalist," and Coralie Fargeat for "The Substance," illustrating a fresh infusion of directorial talent in the industry.
Other noteworthy nominees include Demi Moore receiving a Lead Actress nomination for the body horror film "The Substance," and popular names like Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande being recognized in the supporting actress category for their roles in "Emilia Perez" and "Wicked," respectively.
Yet, the announcement was not without a sober reflection of current events. With devastating wildfires in Los Angeles still raging, BAFTA Chair Sara Putt reminded everyone that the global film community stands united in support. Despite the uncertainty this brings for the upcoming ceremony slated for February 16 on BBC One, iPlayer, and BritBox, the celebration of the art form continues unabated.
The significance of the BAFTAs lies not just in the honors themselves but in their uncanny ability to predict Oscar winners. Historically, roughly 75% of BAFTA nominees go on to receive Academy Award nominations, making this event a bellwether for the Oscars set for March 3.
As the industry awaits the ceremony, one thing is clear: This year's BAFTA nominees represent the cutting edge of talent and innovation in contemporary cinema.
