In a sit-down with Joe Rogan, Mel Gibson shares insight on the long-awaited sequel to his 2004 controversial biblical movie 'The Passion of the Christ' what to expect from the upcoming second installment.

AceShowbiz - Mel Gibson has officially provided a major update on his highly anticipated sequel to the 2004 blockbuster "The Passion of the Christ." Speaking on Joe Rogan's podcast, Gibson said he reveals the title and plans to start filming "The Resurrection of the Christ" in 2026.

The movie has been in development since at least 2016, and Gibson has spent the past seven years working on the script with his brother Donal and "Braveheart" writer Randall Wallace.

Gibson revealed that the script is unlike anything he has ever encountered, describing it as "an acid trip." Suggesting an intricate narrative that include the death of the last apostle, he noted, "In order to tell the story properly, you have to start with the fall of the angels. You're in another realm. You need to go Hell. You need to go to Sheol."

The director confirmed that original "Passion" star Jim Caviezel would reprise his role as Jesus although he acknowledged that some de-aging CGI might be required. "It's been two decades since the original film, but only three days are supposed to have passed in the story," Gibson explained.

To make the story more accessible, Gibson suggested that the dialogue would likely be in English rather than Aramaic or Hebrew. He pointed out that the concepts in the film are already complex, and using a different language might complicate things further.

Gibson also delved into the personal significance of the resurrection story for him. "I personally believe the resurrection actually happened," he said. Reflecting on his faith, he mentioned how it helped him overcome his struggles with alcoholism.

"Stuff happens in your own life … the results you get from appealing to a higher power other than yourself. I don't think it's any secret that I'm flawed in my nature. For me, that was a miracle," he reflected.

In the podcast, Gibson discussed the intricate planning required for the film, noting the challenge of depicting Hell and Satan's origins without being cheesy or obvious. "It's almost like a magic trick," he commented, illustrating the creative complexity involved in bringing the sequel to the screen.

As production is slated to begin in 2026, fans and followers of Gibson's work can look forward to what promises to be an ambitious and thought-provoking addition to his filmography.
