AceShowbiz - The 2025 Golden Globes, hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, have ignited considerable controversy following her opening monologue, which included jokes about the ongoing allegations against music magnate Sean "P. Diddy" Combs. Glaser's remarks have drawn criticism from several quarters, particularly from attorneys representing Combs' accusers.
During her monologue, Glaser made a quip comparing the Zendaya Coleman-starring film "Challengers" to Diddy's situation, saying, "[Challengers] was more sexually charged than Diddy's credit card," and expressed her disappointment about the after-party due to recent events.
"The after party is not going to be as good this year, but we have to move on. I know 'Stanley Tucci Freak Off' doesn't have the same ring to it," she added before concluding, "No baby oil, just lots of olive oil," referring to Tucci's Italian foodie show.
These comments were met with immediate backlash from the legal representatives of Diddy's accusers. Ariel Mitchell, an attorney for several of Combs' accusers, told TMZ that jokes like Glaser's contributed to a culture where survivors were discouraged from coming forward.
Another attorney, Tyrone Blackburn, agreed with such sentiments, arguing that a comedian of Glaser's caliber should strive for humor that doesn't trivialize such serious issues.
On the show, Glaser continued to reference the scandal surrounding Diddy, by targeting the celebrity attendees, "I predict, five years from now, when you're watching old clips of this show on YouTube, you'll see someone in one of the crowd shots, and you'll go, ‘Oh my god, that was before they caught that guy.' We could be making history tonight, and, like, we don't even know with who," she quipped.
Glaser later revealed on Howard Stern's SiriusXM show that she actually planned a more savage joke that could upset everyone in the room that night, suggesting that this would be the "last time all of you will be the same room together until the Diddy trial." She explained why she scrapped that bit, "I didn't tell that joke because it's like you're accusing the people of that room of being involved in that, and they might turn on you."
Diddy is currently being held in Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center after his indictment on multiple serious charges. Denied bail on multiple occasions, he awaits trial in May 2025. If convicted, he faces a minimum sentence of 15 years and a maximum of life imprisonment.
