AceShowbiz - The fascinating saga of "Life of the Party," a track from Kanye West's album "Donda", is a compelling tale of artistic collaboration, sudden leaks, and a touch of serendipity. The story revolves around three iconic figures: Kanye, Andre 3000, and Drake.
Andre, in an interview with The New York Times' "Popcast", revealed how a song born out of mutual grief and shared experiences almost never saw the light of day. However, it was the actions of a third party that ensured its release.
Andre 3000, one-half of the legendary Outkast, recounted how his involvement with "Life of the Party" began due to a shared personal loss with Kanye West.
"I knew he lost his mom just like I lost my mom so I knew that subject matter better than anyone," Andre shared, elaborating on how Kanye had sent him the entire "Donda" album for his feedback. After meticulously listening and giving his notes, Andre found an emotional connection with "Life of the Party" and decided to contribute to the track.
However, the collaboration hit a snag due to Kanye's then-policy of avoiding explicit language on the album. Kanye asked Andre to rewrite his verse to fit this criterion, but Andre was steadfast about keeping his original, explicit verse. This disagreement left the future of the song uncertain.
"What people don't know is that at that point, Kanye and I really weren't in agreement of how the song would be released. I'm not sure if it was even going to come out," Andre explained. He even suggested that his verse be removed from the song if it couldn't be presented in its original form.
Enter Drake, who was embroiled in a feud with Kanye at the time. Drake managed to get hold of the track and leaked it during his radio show before Andre and Kanye could finalize their decision about its release. Andre was initially baffled by Drake's actions but ultimately appreciative. "I didn't understand why he did it," Andre commented, "but [I] kind of have to thank Drake for letting that song see the light of day."
This leak sparked widespread interest and clear misconceptions among fans. Many believed Andre was caught off guard by Kanye's diss verse aimed at Drake within the song. Clearing the air, Andre emphasized that he was aware of the diss verse and had even discussed it with Kanye. "I had my feelings about it. I was like, 'Man, do you really want to do this on this type of song? It's kind of like going and shooting up your mom's funeral.' "
Despite the tumultuous path, "Life of the Party" was included in the deluxe version of "Donda" several months later. This fascinating interplay between artistic vision, personal loss, and unexpected intervention by Drake has immortalized the song in hip-hop lore. And ultimately, fans have Drake's contentious act to thank for it, ensuring Andre's heartfelt verse found its audience.
