His agents LyNea Bell and Charleen McGuire confirmed his death on Sunday, December 22 in an emailed statement to USA TODAY. The cause of death was complications from diabetes, a condition Evans had battled for several years.
Born Arthur James Evans in Berkeley, California, Evans made his acting debut in the James Baldwin play "The Amen Corner" at the Theater of Being in Los Angeles. The show later moved to Broadway in 1965, showcasing Evans' considerable talent.
Evans' cinematic breakthrough came in 1984 with his role in the critically acclaimed war drama "A Soldier's Story", where he played Private Wilkie alongside Howard E. Rollins Jr. and Adolph Caesar. The film earned three Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.
The following year, Evans joined the cast of the sitcom "Nine to Five", starring alongside Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton. He also made a memorable appearance in "Die Hard 2" as Leslie Barnes, an air traffic control tower employee who assists Bruce Willis' John McClane.
Throughout his career, Evans appeared in over 120 films and television shows, including "M*A*S*H", "Hill Street Blues", "Family Matters", "The X-Files" and "Monk". His final role was a voiceover stint on the Disney+ animated series "The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder".
