AceShowbiz - Sacha Baron Cohen is rumored to join the cast of "Spider-Man 4" as the villain Mephisto. Fans have been eagerly awaiting for the notorious baddie to make his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) for years, with frequent rumors and hints raising anticipation. Recently, Mephisto was name-dropped in Episode 3 of the Scarlet Witch spin-off series "Agatha All Along"", further fueling the speculation.
Industry insider Jeff Sneider recently reported in his newsletter The InSneider that Marvel may have secured Cohen for the role of Mephisto although he cast some doubt on the rumor. One source noted that Cohen's schedule in 2025 will be hectic due to a top-secret Universal movie he needs to promote.
Marvel head Kevin Feige reportedly has bigger plans for Mephisto, and they include an appearance in 2025's "Ironheart". Yet, the insider posed the question, "But would Marvel really cast an actor as big as SBC in a role as big as Mephisto just to waste him in the second-tier Disney+ series Ironheart? I don't think so…"
The latest Spidey film, "Spider-Man: No Way Home", concluded with the world forgetting Peter Parker's identity as Spider-Man. This puts Tom Holland's character in an intriguing position for new storylines, including dealing with the aftermath of Eddie Brock's symbiote invasion as shown post-credits. Rumors also hint at the return of symbiotes, possibly including Tom Hardy's Venom, and introductions of new college mates, potentially including Gwen Stacy and Harry Osborn.
Rumored additions to the cast, including Charlie Cox's Daredevil making an appearance, have been a point of interest. Moreover, Zendaya Coleman's MJ is expected to have a reduced role due to her packed filming schedule for other projects like "Euphoria" and "Dune: Messiah".
"Spider-Man 4" is slated to begin shooting from June to October 2025, with a release date set for July 24, 2026. Directed by Daniel Destin Cretton, known for "Shang-Chi", the film sits snugly in the MCU's release schedule, placed between "Avengers: Doomsday" and Christopher Nolan's new film dropping around the same time.
With Mephisto, symbiotes, new classmates, and possible returns for Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, "Spider-Man 4" is shaping up to be a must-watch spectacle in the Marvel franchise.
