Combining dance, competition, and romance can be as complicated as a well-executed tango, and Val Chmerkovskiy, a seasoned pro on 'Dancing With the Stars', offers a candid perspective on the matter.

AceShowbiz - Val Chmerkovskiy, who has been charming audiences on "Dancing With the Stars" (DWTS) since 2006, recently shared his thoughts on the delicate balance between romance and competition on the popular show. In an appearance on the "Lightweights Podcast", Chmerkovskiy candidly discussed the challenges and unprofessionalism of engaging in romantic relationships with celebrity dance partners.

"Long time ago, my first couple of seasons, I've been given partners that I did have romantic exchanges with - incredibly unprofessional to do so in my mind," he revealed.

As the teacher and partner, he acknowledges a certain position of authority, making such relationships inappropriate. Reflecting on his experiences, he added, "Behind closed doors, I undermined my own season by doing that."

Chmerkovskiy, who married fellow "DWTS" pro Jenna Johnson in 2019 and welcomed their son Rome in 2023, emphasized the importance of maintaining professionalism during the competition. "I'm very serious about my job and my craft," he said.

He believes that romantic involvement should be reserved for after the season when both individuals are no longer working together. However, he also conceded that on-screen romances can make for "a really dope show."

The rise of social media has significantly impacted the dynamics of "DWTS". "When I was doing the show, social media wasn't as vibrant as it is right now," Chmerkovskiy noted. Social media has become a powerful tool for contestants, complicating genuine connections with the temptation to play up relationships for likes and views.

While Chmerkovskiy acknowledges the allure of show-mances, he takes issue with inauthentic relationships. "When it's two adults putting on a show because they know they can manipulate the algorithm to give them more likes and more views and more this - I just don't like anything that's inauthentic."

For Chmerkovskiy, genuine chemistry doesn't always involve a romantic or sexual connection. He pointed to his wife Jenna Johnson's partnership with "The Bachelor" alum Joey Graziadei in Season 33.

"Chemistry doesn't always have to have a sexual essence behind it... Chemistry is camaraderie. Chemistry is compatibility. Chemistry is friendship. When you trust somebody, you open up to somebody," he said.

Ultimately, Val Chmerkovskiy's reflections offer a compelling look at the intertwining worlds of dance, romance, and competition on "DWTS", emphasizing the importance of authenticity and professionalism in creating unforgettable performances.
