AceShowbiz - On Tuesday, December 3, British indie band Sports Team faced a terrifying ordeal when their tour van was robbed at gunpoint in Vallejo, California. The band had stopped at a Starbucks for coffee just ahead of their first gig in Sacramento.
Security footage showed a masked individual breaking into the van, prompting the band members and their tour manager to intervene. However, one of the robbers brandished a firearm at the tour manager. The suspects then ransacked the van, stealing cameras, laptops, passports and other personal items.
"I really thought I was about to watch someone get shot," said drummer Al Greenwood. "The people around us weren't very panicked at all. It seemed like a very everyday occurrence."
Despite the incident, Sports Team remained determined to perform their Sacramento show that night. "They can take our Nintendo Switches, but they can never take our ability to play rock songs about motorways," they wrote on Instagram.
The band later revealed that some of their personal belongings and equipment were taken, including laptops, in-ear monitors and film cameras. However, their instruments remained safe due to the reinforced back of their van.
The incident highlighted the escalating crime in Vallejo. The band was shocked by the lack of urgency from the police, who instructed them to file a report online.
Despite the setback, Sports Team expressed their excitement for the remainder of their tour. "It's been quite a surreal day... but there's no better way to get through something like that than to get on stage and connect with people through music," said Greenwood.
The band's resilience and determination amidst adversity has garnered support from fans and fellow musicians. The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by touring artists and the need for increased security measures in high-crime areas.
