AceShowbiz - Black Friday, typically a lucrative day for the box office, has reached an all-time high this year, with total earnings projected to reach $107 million. The success is largely attributed to Disney's highly anticipated animated film "Moana 2".
"Moana 2" is expected to shatter the Black Friday record for the highest-grossing film, surpassing "Frozen II" $34.1 million in 2019. Projections indicate that "Moana 2" could earn up to $55 million, making it the first film to break the $100 million mark on Black Friday.
The excitement for "Moana 2" has also led to a high demand for tickets, resulting in a 13-minute wait time on AMC's website. However, the theater chain has assured that the situation is under control.
Other films contributing to Black Friday's record-breaking success include Universal's "Wicked" and Paramount's "Gladiator II". "Wicked" is projected to earn $27 million on Friday, while "Gladiator II" is aiming for $12.6 million.
In all, Black Friday is poised to be the highest-grossing day of 2024 to date, outpacing the $118.3 million earned on Friday, July 26. This is a significant achievement, especially considering that "Deadpool & Wolverine" held the previous opening-day record with $96.1 million.
Additionally, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has become the first Hollywood star to have two No. 1 openings in the same month. With "Moana 2" and "Red One", Johnson has set a rare box office record.
