AceShowbiz - Margot Robbie is perplexed by the poor reception of her movie "Babylon" despite positive critical reception and her own enjoyment of the film.
Directed by Damian Chazelle, "Babylon" is a Hollywood epic set in the 1920s, depicting the transition from silent movies to talkies. Despite a budget of $80 million, the film underperformed at the box office, grossing only $15 million domestically and $63 million worldwide.
Appearing on the "Talking Pictures" podcast, Robbie, who starred as the rising star Nellie LaRoy, expressed her confusion over the film's failure. "I am still saying that," she said, referring to her belief in the film's quality. "I love it. I don't get it either. I know I am biased, but I still can't figure out why people hated it."
She went on, "I wonder if in 20 years people are going to be like, 'Wait, 'Babylon' didn't do well at the time?' Like when you hear that 'Shawshank Redemption' was a failure at the time and you're like like, 'How is that possible?' "
Robbie praised Chazelle for his "thorough" approach to filmmaking, recounting how she offered him 51 different accent versions for her character. "It was like doing a one-woman show... We got so specific," she said.
While audiences were unimpressed, film critics were divided. Variety's Peter Debruge called the film an "exuberantly messy" and "extravagant" look at Hollywood's early days.
Chazelle himself has also commented on the flop, admitting that it has impacted his future projects. "I won't get a budget of 'Babylon' size any time soon... Certainly, in financial terms, 'Babylon' didn't work at all," he said. Despite the setback, Chazelle expressed optimism and a willingness to continue making bold films.
