AceShowbiz - The Miss Universe Competition is back in 2024 with 130 contestants from around the world showcasing their unique national costumes. Held in Mexico City, the preliminary round featured extravagant outfits inspired by nature, history and local traditions.
Miss Great Britain Christina Dela Cruz represented the U.K.'s 121 million oak trees with a leaf-adorned jumpsuit and gold crown. Miss Ecuador Tema Mara wore a massive costume depicting Quito's historic churches, while Miss Netherlands Faith Landman stunned in a gown that transformed into a piece of pottery, a nod to Dutch craft.
Nature inspired many costumes, including Miss Guatemala's beaded leaf display and Miss Argentina's rainforest-themed dress with a toucan perched atop her head. Miss Cuba Marianela Ancheta drew inspiration from the Cuban goddess Oshun, while Miss Bolivia Juliana Barrientos adorned a stunning skirt and headdress resembling an owl.
Miss Dominican Republic Celinee Santos, a favorite to win, wowed the crowd in a pearly sea-shell style getup. Miss Canada Ashley Callingbull, the first Indigenous woman to be crowned Miss Universe Canada, wore a spectacular multi-color gown as a tribute to her heritage. Miss Puerto Rico Jennifer Colon Alvarado graced the stage in an enchanting white gown adorned with her country's flag.
After the national costume round, contestants took to the runway in coordinated swimwear outfits. On Saturday, November 16, 30 finalists will be announced, including one fan-voted favorite, who will compete in the swimsuit round, evening gown showcase and question-and-answer rounds.
Judges for this year's competition include social media star Lele Pons, 1978 Miss Universe Margaret Gardiner and Colombian singer Fariana Telemundo. Host and former Miss Universe winner Olivia Culpo will crown the winner, who will inherit the "Lumiere De L'Infini" crown from 2023 winner Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua.
This year marks the first time Belarus, Eritrea, Guinea and the United Arab Emirates have participated in Miss Universe. Cuba and Fiji have also returned to the competition after long absences. However, Panama's contestant Italy Mora was disqualified for allegedly violating pageant rules.
