AceShowbiz - The Recording Academy has continued answering questions about one of its categories. The learned academy of musical professionals, which is responsible for the Grammy Awards, clarified eligibility for Best New Artist after defending Sabrina Carpenter's nomination in the category.
On Tuesday, November 12, the official Instagram account of the academy shared a new post. The caption read, "Every year, the #GRAMMYs Best New Artist category acknowledges rising stars who are shaping the future of music through their own artistry."
It went on to read, "Little does it matter if they have just a few singles or 10 studio albums under their belts. The Best New Artist Category is all about highlighting how an act pushes creative boundaries and challenges a saturated industry with outstanding - and sometimes surprising - music."
"At the link in our bio get to know the artists nominated for this year's Best New Artist award," it continued. "Each of these artists are forging bold, inspiring careers and with this well-deserved nomination, the Recording Academy recognizes their efforts and celebrates their success."
It did not take long for the post to be flooded with mixed online responses from Instagram users. One in particular suggested, "Then y'all should name it best breakthrough artist not best new artist." Similarly, another chimed in, "Then this should be renamed as Best Breakthrough Artist. This happens every year."
Meanwhile, a third wrote, "Amazing post. Some d*mb people take too serious the phrase 'Best NEW artist', instead of searching the meaning, and the category can be interpreted in different ways according to artist's journeys and events."
The post came after the CEO of the Recording Academy, Harvey Mason Jr., defended Sabrina's Best New Artist nomination. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Harvey acknowledged the complexities involved in deciding who qualifies for this coveted category.
"It's difficult, I'll say that," Harvey stated. "I was going to say it's pretty simple, but it's actually not that simple. It's difficult, and it's challenging because it's a little bit amorphous how you would evaluate best new artist."
