AceShowbiz - Laverne Cox, best known for her role in "Orange Is the New Black," has publicly expressed her concerns about Donald Trump presidency. In a recent interview with Variety, Cox opened up about the growing anxiety she and many in the transgender community feel as anti-trans rhetoric intensifies during Trump's campaign.
Now that Trump wins the election, the star and her trans friends start discussions about relocating to more welcoming places abroad. "We're doing research on different cities in Europe and in the Caribbean," Cox said, noting that she isn't alone in considering such a drastic move. The apprehension is palpable within her community, as more people are exploring relocation options as a last resort.
Cox drew a chilling parallel between the current political climate and historical events, comparing today's anti-LGBTQ policies to the persecution seen in Weimar Germany. "There was this thriving community of queer people in Berlin pre the rise of Nazism. They attacked Jewish folks. They attacked immigrants, they attacked queer and trans people," she recalled.
Despite her efforts to remain optimistic, Cox admitted that the fear is overwhelming. "I don't want to be in too much fear, but I'm scared. As a public figure, with all my privilege, I'm scared, and I'm particularly scared because I'm a public figure," she shared.
The sense of being a potential target is intensified by the significant financial backing behind anti-trans campaigns. "I think they spent close to $100 million on anti-trans ads. It's deeply concerning," Cox added.
As the political landscape continues to shift, the voices of those like Laverne Cox are crucial in bringing attention to the grave implications of anti-trans rhetoric. It remains to be seen how political leaders will respond to these concerns, but the conversation started by influential figures like Cox is a necessary step towards advocating for a more inclusive and accepting society.
