AceShowbiz - Nicholas Hoult has provided a glimpse into his interpretation of Lex Luthor, the iconic villain in James Gunn's upcoming Superman film. During the AFI Fest, Hoult shared his excitement about portraying the character, expressing his admiration for Gunn's leadership and the special treatment they have given Luthor.
"I think it's a little too early to say what's different about my Lex Luthor," Hoult told Deadline. "You know, I just loved working with James Gunn. I think he's an incredible director and has such a great sense of that world, that story, those characters. I just put my trust in him."
Hoult's presence in the cast alongside David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and MarĂa Gabriela de Faria as The Engineer is a testament to Gunn's commitment to diversifying the DCU. Hoult previously portrayed Hank McCoy/Beast in the X-Men franchise, but his role as Luthor represents a significant departure.
The actor recognized the legacy of the character, acknowledging previous portrayals by Gene Hackman, Jesse Eisenberg and Michael Rosenbaum. He hinted at a unique interpretation, stating they have "done something special with it" that fans will hopefully appreciate.
Gunn's vision for the DCU emphasizes embracing the comic book elements that have made Superman an enduring character. Hoult's comments suggest that his Luthor might deviate from past live-action incarnations, potentially featuring the iconic power armor the villain is known for. The possibility of a physical confrontation between Superman and Luthor adds another dimension to the highly anticipated film.
Superman is scheduled for release on July 11, 2025, and the marketing campaign is expected to intensify in the coming months. Gunn has hinted at a trailer release in December, coinciding with CCXP in Brazil. The trailer is likely to showcase Hoult's Lex Luthor, offering fans a first glimpse of his distinct portrayal and setting the stage for Superman's cinematic return.
