AceShowbiz - The first trailer for Prime Video's "Cruel Intentions" reboot dropped Thursday, October 24, promising all the intrigue and teen-angst of the original, only in episodic format. The series, which consists of eight episodes, is set to premiere on November 21 worldwide. This modern retake transforms the narrative onto the backdrop of an elite college's Greek life and retains the themes of deceit, seduction, and cruelty from the 1999 cult film.
At the heart of the story is an indecent bet between affluent step-siblings Caroline Merteuil (Sarah Catherine Hook) and Lucien Valmont (Zac Burgess), who rule the Greek system at Manchester College, an elite university near Washington D.C.
After a hazing incident jeopardizes their charter, Caroline recruits Lucien's help to get the U.S. vice president's daughter Annie (Savannah Lee Smith) to pledge her sorority. She tells him to "convince her in the way only you can," to which Lucien replies, "What's in it for me?" Caroline's response, "What you've always wanted. Me," sets the tone for their manipulation and scheming.
The 1999 film "Cruel Intentions" starred Reese Witherspoon, Ryan Phillippe, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Selma Blair. It was a contemporary adaptation of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' 1782 novel "Les Liaisons Dangereuses." Fans can expect nostalgic callbacks in the new series, such as a cover of The Verve's "Bitter Sweet Symphony" and familiar props, including a black convertible and a rosary necklace with a hidden secret.
The reboot is being developed by Pheobe Fisher and Sara Goodman, with Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty of Original Film, who also worked on the original movie, serving as executive producers alongside Roger Kumble, who directed and wrote the 1999 film. Sean Patrick Thomas, who played Ronald Clifford in the original film, will return as Professor Chadwick in the reboot, adding to the nostalgia.
Despite several direct-to-video sequels and a failed pilot attempt, this new reboot aims to rejuvenate the "Cruel Intentions" franchise for a modern audience. The series production involves Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, and Original Film.
Prime Video's "Cruel Intentions" series is set to explore the dark and manipulative world of privilege and power within college Greek life. Mark your calendars for November 21, when the first episode drops, and prepare to be entranced by this sinister modern drama.
