AceShowbiz - Michael Newman, who rose to fame in the '90s as lifeguard Mike "Newmie" Newman on the hit TV series "Baywatch", has died at the age of 68. The news was confirmed by his close friend, director Matt Felker, who shared that Newman passed away "from heart complications" on Sunday, October 20, "surrounded by his family and friends."

Newman, diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2006, appeared in 150 episodes of "Baywatch", second only to David Hasselhoff in the number of episodes filmed. Also, Newman was the only cast member who was actually a real-life lifeguard. He began his lifeguard career as a Santa Monica Junior Lifeguard at the young age of 10 and went on to serve Los Angeles County for 20 years.

Aside from his on-screen role, Newman was a full-time firefighter, balancing both duties impressively until he retired after a 25-year firefighting career. Even after "Baywatch" ended its run in 2001, Newman continued his work as a firefighter until retirement.

Felker, who directed the Hulu docuseries "After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun", described Newman's character, and their final interaction, poignantly recalling Newman's words, "You're just in time." Felker honored his friend with a heartfelt Instagram post, writing, "I lost my hero yesterday. As I told him before he left this Earth. I will see you again. I promise."

Despite his battle with Parkinson's Disease, Newman's spirit remained indomitable. "This terminal disease has allowed me a lot of thinking time, which I maybe didn't want, but it's brought me wisdom," he told PEOPLE in August.

Newman, who took 10 medications daily and often woke up feeling jittery, used his later years to raise money for the Michael J. Fox Foundation, actively contributing to the fight against Parkinson's disease.

Newman's role in "Baywatch" cemented his place in television history, alongside co-stars like Pamela Anderson, Nicole Eggert, Yasmine Bleeth, and Jeremy Jackson. The series, which became the most-watched TV show globally with over 1.1 billion viewers, followed a team of lifeguards led by Lieutenant Mitch Buchannon (Hasselhoff).

Michael Newman's impact extended beyond the screen. As he clearly stated, "I am cherishing the days that I get to be on this earth with family and friends. I'm taking life seriously. It's not a run-through." His life exemplified dedication, bravery, and resilience, making him a true hero both in fiction and reality.

Newman is survived by his wife, Sarah, their children Chris and Emily, and their 1-year-old granddaughter, Charlie. His legacy continues to inspire, reminding us of the fleeting nature of life and the importance of living with purpose.
