AceShowbiz - Liam Payne, the 31-year-old former One Direction singer, was reportedly under the influence of "Cristal," a known hallucinogenic that can lead to aggressive behavior and hallucinations, when he fell to his death from an Argentina hotel balcony on Wednesday night, October 16.
According to Buenos Aires police, the drug may have played a role in Payne's erratic behavior before his fatal plunge. Images from his hotel room after his death reveal a chaotic scene with trashed furniture, champagne bottles and various drug paraphernalia, including powders and aluminum foil.
Investigators speculate that the hallucinations caused by Cristal could have contributed to Payne's fall from the third-floor balcony. They also found wax and burned foil in the room's bathtub. Payne's body was discovered on the ground floor with a whiskey bottle, lighter and cellphone.
A preliminary autopsy report confirmed that Payne died from multiple traumatic injuries and internal and external bleeding. Authorities stated that no defensive injuries were present, suggesting no third-party involvement. However, a toxicology report is still pending.
In the months leading up to his death, Payne reportedly claimed to be sober. However, sources indicate that his behavior may have changed recently. He checked into rehab in July but left after a few days. Payne had previously entered rehab twice, citing addiction concerns.
Payne's death has sparked an investigation into the drug's source. Prosecutors believe a hotel employee procured the drugs for Payne. An indictment for drug distribution is expected shortly. The investigation also aims to determine if any third parties were involved.
