AceShowbiz - Released in theaters, "Saturday Night" has received a glowing review from none other than Dan Aykroyd, an original cast member of the iconic sketch comedy show. After witnessing Jason Reitman's directorial effort, which chronicles the 90 minutes leading up to the first "Saturday Night Live" broadcast in 1975, Aykroyd took to social media to heap praise upon the film.
"Cracking a Head to applaud Jason Reitman's triumphant 'SNL' film. Wow! What a propulsive, engaging, funny, beautifully cast and acted, suspenseful, adventurous, music-filled ride," Aykroyd wrote on Friday, the 49th anniversary of the show's debut.
Aykroyd lauded the film's accuracy, claiming it was "pretty accurate." He added, "I was there that night and got to relive it wonderfully again. Congratulations Gil [Kenan, co-writer], Jason, and [producer Jason Blumenfeld]. Don't miss it whether you know the show or not. It is a stand-alone masterpiece and a surefire candidate for Best Picture."
Reitman previously revealed that casting Aykroyd was a challenging task, but Dylan O'Brien's portrayal ultimately "saved" the film. The director added, "Dylan walked in and saved us. I know Dan really well. I grew up with Aykroyd and I've now directed him, so I feel like I could write any scene for Dan Aykroyd at this point. When I gave Dylan a couple keys to find Aykroyd, suddenly it just clicked open and that was the final piece of the puzzle."
As "Saturday Night" hits theaters, "Saturday Night Live" itself is celebrating its milestone 50th season, with Ariana Grande hosting this weekend alongside musical guest Stevie Nicks.
