AceShowbiz - On Saturday, October 5, 20-year-old YouTube star Jack Doherty crashed his custom-designed McLaren 570S while driving down a Miami highway on the streaming platform Kick.
Footage of the incident, which was later removed from the platform, shows Doherty glancing down at his phone while driving in heavy rain. He abruptly loses control of the car, causing it to skid across several lanes and strike a metal barrier.
A video posted on Doherty's X (formerly Twitter) account shows the aftermath of the crash, with Doherty frantically calling for assistance. Bystanders helped break open the driver's side window, and Doherty continues filming while asking one of them to hold his camera as he exits the car.
In the video, Doherty expresses dismay over his damaged car and checks on his passenger, Michael. Michael's face is seen with blood dripping down it, and a subsequent video shows the pair in a hospital room as a doctor stitches Michael's wounds.
Over 185,000 people were viewing Doherty's stream at the time of the crash. He purchased the McLaren for $202,850 last year and had since customized it with a unique paint design.
Kick's community guidelines prohibit dangerous behavior and prioritize the safety of users, the platform stated. In response to the incident, Kick banned Doherty from the platform.
Fellow YouTubers and livestreamers widely criticized Doherty's actions. They expressed concern that his focus on recording and fame overshadowed his concern for his passenger's well-being.
Doherty has previously faced criticism for similar incidents on his social media accounts. In November 2023, he posted a video of himself flipping over a golf cart with his girlfriend in the passenger seat.
