After months of social media hints and fan speculation, "Always Sunny" co-creator Rob McElhenney confirmed the news on Thursday, October 3 with a photo featuring himself, Charlie Day and "Abbott Elementary" creator Quinta Brunson outside the Warner Bros. lot studio for the latter show. McElhenney later posted another photo, adding "Always Sunny" star Danny DeVito and "Abbott Elementary" cast members Tyler James Williams and William Stanford Davis to the mix.
The crossover episode has been in the works for some time, with Brunson previously teasing a "very cool" and "unexpected" event in the upcoming season of "Abbott Elementary". The possibility of a collaboration was first hinted at in February by McElhenney, who suggested that a crossover between the two Philadelphia-set shows would make sense.
No details have been released about the plot of the crossover episode, but fans have already begun to speculate about potential storylines. Some ideas include the "Always Sunny" gang breaking into Willard R. Abbott Elementary School, attempting to complete their degrees, or teaching their own lessons to the students.
The crossover episode is set to premiere during season 4 of "Abbott Elementary", which returns on October 9 at 9:30 P.M. ET on ABC. "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" is currently in the writers' room and will begin filming its eighth episodes of season 17 later this fall.
