AceShowbiz - Andrew Garfield expressed his initial apprehension about shaving Florence Pugh's head for their upcoming film, "We Live in Time". Speaking to British Vogue, he admitted feeling nervous prior to the scene, worried that he might somehow harm her physical appearance. However, Garfield ultimately found the experience to be an intimate and beautiful one, expressing gratitude for Pugh's "nicely shaped melon."
Pugh, who plays a woman diagnosed with an illness in the film, explains that shaving her head was a "really bizarre" and "spiritual" experience. In many cultures, hair is considered sacred, and removing it felt like a significant change. She describes her head as being extremely sensitive and her body as going into a form of trauma. Pugh confides that she felt cold all the time as her hair grew back.
Despite the physical discomfort, Pugh emphasizes the importance of her hairless appearance in conveying the pain and vulnerability of her character. She believes that actors should strive to portray human suffering and ugliness authentically, and that her baldness helped her bring this to life. Pugh also notes that the process of regrowth mirrored her own personal growth and life changes during that period.
"We Live in Time", directed by John Crowley, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and will be released in limited theaters on October 11 before expanding nationwide on October 18. The film follows the love story of Almut (Pugh) and Tobias (Garfield), who meet by accident and navigate the challenges of time, marriage, family and illness.
