AceShowbiz - The highly anticipated sequel to "The Batman" has finally received an official update from director Matt Reeves. Reeves confirmed that the movie will feature Batman investigating a mystery that delves into "deeper corruption" within Gotham City.
"It goes into places [Bruce Wayne] couldn't even anticipate in the first one," Reeves said to SFX Magazine. "The seeds of where this goes are all in the first movie, and it expands in a way that will show you aspects of the character you never got to see."
Reeves refused to reveal specific details about the main antagonist(s) but hinted at the possibility of facing the Court of Owls, a shadowy organization featured in DC Comics. However, he ruled out the inclusion of certain "fantastical" characters, including Gentleman Ghost.
"We might push to the edge of fantastical, but we would never go into full fantastical," Reeves stated. "It's meant to feel quite grounded. It doesn't mean that you won't see characters that people love. That's exactly what we want to do."
Filming for "The Batman Part II" is set to commence in 2025. Colin Farrell's Penguin will return, connecting the upcoming television series "The Penguin" to the movie.
Reeves emphasized that the corruption theme will be central to the sequel. "Batman is constantly battling these forces," he said. "But those forces can't be entirely exorcised. So the next movie delves deeper into that."
With the box office success of the first film, Warner Bros. is hoping for a repeat performance with the sequel. It remains to be seen whether Zoe Kravitz's Catwoman and Andy Serkis' Alfred Pennyworth will reprise their roles.
