AceShowbiz - Sam Hazeldine has expressed his delight in assuming the role of Adar in the second season of Amazon Prime Video's "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power". Previously played by Joseph Mawle, Adar has become a compelling character for Hazeldine.
"It was a pleasure to take on the role," Hazeldine told ComicBook. "He's such a rich character that's been created by the writers and by Joseph in Season 1."
Hazeldine described Adar as morally complex. "He doesn't think about the moral question," he said. "It's like a whatever-it-takes thing. He wants to find a home for his children, the uruks. He's deeply scarred from his past with Sauron and Morgoth."
"I think his actions are purely, from his perspective, for the good of his children," Hazeldine continued. "He's frightening because he feels like he has a worthy cause and he's organized."
In the second season, Adar must confront the return of Sauron. Hazeldine hinted at Adar's existential crisis amidst the conflict.
"At the beginning of the season, he doesn't really know what to do next," Hazeldine said. "He's fulfilled his responsibility to his children, but now he faces a new call to adventure."
Hazeldine's transition into the role was facilitated by his familiarity with Joseph Mawle. "I know Joseph, I worked with him years ago. I really loved what he did in the first season," he said.
Despite the physical transformation required for the role, Hazeldine faced a linguistic challenge in mastering Black Speech. "The hardest thing was I had to go straight into speaking Black Speech on day one," he said. "It's hard on your throat and difficult to remember."
Hazeldine also revealed that season 2 will delve deeper into Adar's origins and his history with Sauron. "There was an offer for power and for something else, which you'll find out later on in the show," he teased. "He willingly took the deal and was horrifically tortured and maimed."
"Season 2 starts with a bang, and I was surprised at how kind of bloodthirsty and violent it is," Hazeldine added. 'The Rings of Power' season 2 premieres on Prime Video on August 29th.
