AceShowbiz - In a candid teaser for an upcoming episode of Bunnie XO's "Dumb Blonde" podcast, Elle King, 35, opened up about the complexities of her relationship with her father, comedian Rob Schneider, 60. The singer, who is the product of Schneider's brief marriage to former model London King, detailed years of estrangement and emotional distance.
"I got four or five years without talking to my dad," King said, noting that reconnection remained out of reach until she "was much, much older." Growing up primarily under her mother and stepfather's care in Ohio, King's childhood visits with Schneider were more confusing than comforting. "If I would ever spend a summer with my dad it would be on a movie set. I would just get lost in the shuffle," she recalled.
The Grammy-nominated singer shared painful memories of being sent to what she described as "fat camp" by Schneider. "I was, like, a really, really heavy child. My dad sent me to fat camp. And then I got in trouble one year because I sprained my ankle and I didn't lose any weight. Very toxic and very silly," King explained. Those memories are just a small part of a broader pattern of strained interactions, including forgotten birthdays and a feeling of invisibility.
Beyond personal grievances, King also criticized her father's stance on social issues. "You're talking out of you're a** and you're talking s**t about drag and anti-gay rights and it's like get f***ed," King asserted passionately.
While Schneider has generally remained tight-lipped about his daughter's public critiques, his representatives did not respond to requests for comment.
Despite these challenges, the singer made efforts to repair their relationship, particularly after her 2017 divorce and her struggles with substance abuse and mental health. "I would try every different angle... letters, soft approaches, yelling," she said. However, these efforts often hit a wall. "He's just like, 'well see look you're yelling,' " noted King, emphasizing the frustration in trying to change someone else's actions.
However, King acknowledges the significance of family and expresses a nuanced perspective. "Family really is so important," she told PEOPLE in a 2018 interview, expressing love for her half-sisters and a desire for them to have positive memories of her. "All you can control is how you react and what you do with your feelings," she concluded.
While King has taken strides to mend familial bonds for the sake of her half-sisters, she maintains clear boundaries on issues she feels strongly about, making her stance on both personal and public matters heard loud and clear.
