AceShowbiz - Machine Gun Kelly, formerly known as Colson Baker, has marked a significant milestone in his life by celebrating one year of complete sobriety. The musician disclosed this intimate detail during his appearance on Bunnie XO's "Dumb Blonde" podcast, revealing the trials and triumphs that have shaped his journey from addiction to redemption.
MGK, who embarked on his sobriety journey last August after returning from his European tour, shared with listeners that he initially kept his decision to go to rehab private. "I didn't tell anybody outside of the [people] closest to me," he said. This marked his first-ever stint in rehab, a transformative experience that equipped him with various tools to manage his emotions and underlying anger.
The rapper's battle with substance abuse began at a young age and escalated in his twenties. He admitted to using several drugs, including ecstasy, hydrocodone, Percocet, and cocaine. However, the isolation brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and meeting his now-fiancee Megan Fox in 2020 were pivotal in helping him take strides toward quitting drugs.
Reflecting on his life-changing decision, MGK said, "When I felt that sense light up, everything else went away and I learned what it was to accept living. It gave purpose to everything I was confused as to why I was here for." He credits Megan for being "extremely helpful in dealing with the kind of psychological withdrawals that come with sobriety."
The couple's relationship, which began with palpable chemistry in 2020, has seen its share of ups and downs. Despite pausing their engagement, they remain committed to working on themselves and their partnership. "Communication and therapy are what's working best for them at this time," a close source noted, emphasizing that the relationship is currently in a good place.
MGK's commitment to sobriety also fosters a stronger bond with his 15-year-old daughter, Casie. "I'm really happy that I'm clear when my daughter and I are having conversations and I'm coming from a place of being centered and holding space for what a child needs from a parent," he shared.
Though the journey hasn't been easy, MGK is optimistic about the future. "I continue to embrace that this journey is gonna be hard for me, but I accept it and forgive myself," he said, acknowledging his self-deprecating tendencies while celebrating his growing comfort in showing people who he truly is.
MGK's story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of support systems in overcoming addiction. As he continues to navigate his path of sobriety, his experience offers hope and inspiration to those grappling with similar struggles.
