AceShowbiz - Christine Lakin, best known for her role in the beloved sitcom "Step by Step", recently shared an intriguing story on Jodie Sweetin's podcast, "How Rude, Tanneritos". Lakin was initially thrilled to be cast in "Fuller House," the Netflix reboot of the iconic "Full House" series, as C.J. Harbenberger, Steve Hale's girlfriend. However, her excitement was short-lived.
"And then about two days before the table read, I got a call from my manager saying, 'Yes, something happened. They're pushing the table read. I think there's some stuff with the script they want to rewrite,' " Lakin explained. Her initial confusion turned into disappointment when the next day she was informed, "Hey, I don't know how to tell you this, but you've been let go."
Despite seeking clarity, even from one of the show's writers, Lakin was left in the dark about the reasons behind her sudden dismissal. "What did I do wrong?" Lakin wondered aloud, expressing feelings of bewilderment and frustration.
Reflecting on the experience, Lakin speculated that a 2012 parody video might have been the real reason behind her firing. In the satirical clip for "Funny or Die," Lakin and other past child stars mocked Kirk Cameron, particularly targeting his controversial anti-LGBTQ remarks. "At the time, Kirk Cameron had said some public things about the LGBTQ community, and I thought those were very damaging," she recounted.
Notably, Kirk Cameron is the brother of Candace Cameron Bure, who reprised her role as D.J. Tanner and co-produced "Fuller House." Lakin theorized, "And all I can think of is that it created some bad blood. And seven years later, my presence was not wanted."
Bure herself has been at the center of controversy due to her personal beliefs. In 2022, she left the Hallmark Channel for the Great American Family network, which she claimed better aligned with her faith-based values, explicitly omitting same-sex couples from its programming. Bure's stance has not only drawn public criticism but has also strained relationships with fellow entertainers, including her "Full House" co-star, Jodie Sweetin.
"It was a bummer for me," Lakin admitted, acknowledging the lost opportunity. While she expressed understanding that decisions in the entertainment industry can be highly subjective, she also emphasized the importance of standing up for marginalized communities.
The world of Hollywood may never reveal all its secrets, but Christine Lakin's story sheds light on the complex interplay of personal beliefs and professional opportunities.
