AceShowbiz - DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures have announced the development of "Shrek 5", with the original cast members Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz reprising their roles as Shrek, Donkey, and Princess Fiona, respectively.
Walt Dohrn, who worked on previous "Shrek" films, will direct the fifth installment, while Gina Shay and Chris Meledandri serve as producers. Brad Ableson will co-direct.
The franchise, based on the 1990 children's book by William Steig, has generated over $2.9 billion worldwide from its four previous films. It has also produced a spin-off, "Puss in Boots", starring Antonio Banderas.
The first Shrek film (2001) introduced Shrek as an ogre embarking on a quest to rescue Princess Fiona. Over the years, the franchise has followed Shrek's adventures as he faces midlife crises and searches for the heir to the throne.
In an interview with Collider, Eddie Murphy revealed that the project was in its early stages. He confirmed that the first act had been recorded and the film would be completed within the year.
The plot details for "Shrek 5" remain under wraps, but the return of the original cast and creative team promises an exciting chapter in the beloved franchise. The film is set to hit theaters on July 1, 2026, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the original Shrek film.
