The beloved actress, who charmed audiences as Gomer Pyle's girlfriend and Meg Baldwin on 'General Hospital', has passed away in her hometown of Fayetteville at the age of 88.

AceShowbiz - Elizabeth MacRae died peacefully in her hometown of Fayetteville, North Carolina, on May 27, surrounded by her loved ones. Born on February 22, 1936, in Columbia, South Carolina, MacRae moved to New York City after high school to pursue her dreams of acting. She studied with the legendary Uta Hagen at the Herbert Berghof Studio, gaining experience in off-Broadway productions before making her television debut in "The Verdict Is Yours" in 1958.
MacRae's versatility shone through her numerous television roles in popular shows such as "Bonanza", "Route 66", "Gunsmoke", "The Andy Griffith Show" and "I Dream of Jeannie". Her most memorable role was as Lou-Ann Poovie, Gomer's girlfriend, in "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.". She impressed producers with her initial performance, leading to her recurring presence on the show from 1966 to 1969.
She also left her mark on daytime soaps, starring as Meg Baldwin on "General Hospital" from 1969 to 1973, and appearing on "Days of Our Lives" "Guiding Light" and "Search for Tomorrow". In addition to her television work, Elizabeth MacRae had a successful film career. She voiced Ladyfish in "The Incredible Mr. Limpet", starred in "Everything’s Ducky", and appeared in Frances Ford Coppola's critically acclaimed "The Conversation", where she seduced Gene Hackman's character and stole one of his audiotapes.
After a fulfilling acting career, MacRae transitioned to a new chapter in her life, working at the Freedom Institute as a drug and alcohol counselor. She returned to her roots in Fayetteville, where she was actively involved in the community and was inducted into the Fayetteville Performing Arts Hall of Fame in April 2023.
Elizabeth MacRae's legacy is fondly remembered by her five stepchildren: Terry, Peter, Hugh, Cate and Alex Halsey, as well as several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Her vibrant spirit, described as a performer with the "X factor" by Mayon Weeks, who inducted her into the Hall of Fame, will continue to inspire generations to come.
Donations in her memory can be made to the Fayetteville Animal Protection Society or St. John's Episcopal Church. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
