AceShowbiz - Tems opened up about her experience of having a run-in with law in Uganda. During her appearance on "The Angie Martinez Show", the "Free Mind" hitmaker shared how it changed her perspective of life.
"Something I read about you I'm very curious about," host Angie Martinez said, "You got locked up- you got arrested. Do you guys break some rules? What happened?" Tems set the record straight, saying, "We didn't break the rules. It was basically set up."
The singer further recalled, "We went to Uganda, I had a show in Uganda. It was during the Covid, but they had opened things up. They had just a rally in Uganda and people were going out. It wasn't on lockdown, but it was just like the aftermath."
"The organizers said they had the permits, they sent us the permits. Everything was cool and we went there and there's this particular artist-I'm not sure now what his role was, but he was just basically threatening Nigerian artists that they shouldn't come," she continued, adding that police came after the show.
She continued, "They weren't in uniforms. They just knocked on my hotel door. They just came and said that we should follow them. And my manager was like, 'OK. I'll go with them.' He went with them, but they came back upstairs to pick me up."
Until now, she didn't know who called the police on them. She admitted that it was such a scary experience as she spent two nights in Uganda jail. "I thought I wasn't gonna come out. I thought that was gonna be my- maybe I was seeing this for a reason. Maybe this is for me to help these people in this prison. It was crazy, I'm not gonna lie."
Tems also noted that she found swag style came after her arrest in Uganda since they didn't wash their uniform. "Before, I was calm with my dressing. After, I was like, nah, I'm going to wear anything I want," she revealed. "It made me stop caring about so many things because there's so many women in there for nothing."
