AceShowbiz - The reason why Tom Cruise was absent from the 2023 Academy Awards was reportedly personal. According to a new report, the "Top Gun: Maverick" actor decided to skip the big event despite the movie being nominated for six awards because of his ex Nicole Kidman.
It was said that the 60-year-old actor wanted to avoid an "awkward run-in" with the "Big Little Lies" star, whom he divorced more than 20 years ago. "Tom was not there because she was there, and he did not want a run-in," a source reportedly told the Daily Mail on Monday, March 13.
However, insiders close to Tom allegedly told the news outlet that his absence was "not personal." The source insisted that it was simply the result of scheduling issues.
Tom and Nicole got married back on December 24, 1990. They adopted two children, Isabella and Connor, who are both reportedly members of the Church of Scientology, following in their dad Tom's steps.
The actor later filed for divorce from Nicole in February 2001, citing "irreconcilable differences." Nicole was allegedly left in utter "shock" due to Tom's filing with fans speculating that he ended their marriage because she refused to become a Scientologist.
When asked about the matter, the "Mission: Impossible" actor told Vanity Fair in 2013, "She knows why, and I know why, [we divorced]. She's the mother of my children, and I wish her well. And I think that you just move on."
"And I don't say that lightly. I don't say that with anything," he continued. "Things happen in life, and you do everything you can, and in every possible way, and there's a point at which you just sometimes have to face the brutal reality."
Following their divorce, Tom married actress Katie Holmes on November 18, 2006. The pair, who share daughter Suri, got divorced in August 2012. As for Nicole, the "Aquaman" actress is happily married to country singer Keith Urban.
