AceShowbiz - Johnny Depp's lawyer Camille Vasquez has caught a lot of flak over some comments she made about the defamation trial against Amber Heard. Having previously risen to fame for defending the actor, she is now ripped by social media users for claiming that her client couldn't have harmed Amber he was "too drunk and high" to stand up.
Camille made the arguments on the Discovery+ documentary "Johnny vs Amber: The U.S. Trial" about the high-profile case. On the two-part documentary series that is now available to watch, she questioned Amber's testimony as saying, "That's one part of the case I've never understood. He's either drunk and high and incapable of even standing up, or he's drunk and high and able to attack her, chase her, land blows? It just doesn't make sense."
Camille was soon criticized over her comments, with a Reddit user mocking her, "What an incredibly stupid argument. It's very common for people who are drunk or high to assault others." The same person continued, "If she actually thinks this, I would wonder how someone like her was capable of graduating law school."
Another sarcastically wrote, "So I guess everyone who has been abused by drunks is lying. Great job Camille, always keeping it up with the victim blaming as you do." A third critic added, "Imagine being this ignorant. She's clearly been blessed with never being around an addict. This statement is beyond ridiculous."
A fourth person called Camille's comments "absolutely silly," while someone said, "I genuinely loathe Camille Vasquez because of how all her defenses surrounding [domestic violence] and [intimate partner violence] stem from stereotypes and victim blaming tropes. Nobody would be taking her seriously if her target wasn't Amber, she is genuinely bad at her job."
"Genuinely can't believe Camille Vasquez basically said 'how can you be abused if the abuser is an off balance alcoholic,' " another person weighed in, while someone else sarcastically said, "This must be why bar fights never happen."
Camille has not responded to the backlash over her comments. Her client, Johnny, came out victorious in the trial as the jury found his ex-wife Amber guilty of defaming him with her 2018 op-ed for The Washington Post. He is awarded $10 million in damages and $5 million in punitive damages after his six-week trial against the "Aquaman" actress, though the punitive damages were reduced to $350,000 due to a limit imposed by Virginia state law.
