The 'America's Got Talent' judge, who previously declared that he didn't 'believe' in marriage, pops the question to his partner of eight years in front of their son during their Barbados getaway.

AceShowbiz - Simon Cowell is getting closer to walking down the aisle with Lauren Silverman. The longtime judge of "America's Got Talent" has gotten engaged to his girlfriend during their Barbados getaway after eight years of dating. His representative has confirmed the news.

Offering more details of the secret engagement, a friend of the pair told PEOPLE that the music mogul and his now-fiancee, who have been dating since 2004, got engaged on Christmas Eve in Barbados, where they first met. The source further shared that they went on a walk together and he surprised her by proposing on the beach in front of their 7-year-old son Eric as well as her 16-year-old son Adam from her previous relationship.

"They are both super happy," the informant said of the newly engaged couple. "They've been together a long time now and adore each other so it's not a huge surprise to their close friends."

In the meantime, a separate source spilled to The Sun that Lauren was left "stunned" by the proposal. "Lauren was absolutely stunned and never in a million years expected Simon to pop the question. She burst into tears, happy tears, and obviously said yes straight away," so said the insider.

"Lauren has been Simon's rock over these past few years, supporting him when he broke his back, and through thick and thin generally. They make a wonderful couple," the so-called inside source added. "Whilst Simon never thought he was the marrying type, he's realized he's met the woman of his dreams, and couldn't be happier. In the words of Beyonce, it was time to put a ring on it."

News of the engagement arrived after Simon gushed that his romance with Lauren is still going strong after months of being holed up together during the COVID-19 lockdown. Last November, the 62-year-old music mogul told OK! Magazine, "COVID-19 was the real test."

"Like everyone, we were in lockdown for a long time and that's when you realize whether or not you actually enjoy each other's company or not," Simon continued. "And we really really did. So to answer your question... yes, the romance is still alive. We're closer than ever."

Simon had previously stated that he didn't believe in marriage and worried about what would happen to his fortune if he tied the knot. "The X Factor" creator said in 2008, "I don't believe in marriage, certainly not in this business. The truth is that you get married and in a year or two they clean you out! It's just not going to work."
