AceShowbiz - Gemma Whelan has gotten candid about her experience filming sex scenes on "Game of Thrones". The actress, who portrayed Yara Greyjoy on the hit HBO series, revealed that there's lack of direction while shooting the intimate scenes.
The 40-year-old beauty offered her two cents when sitting down with The Guardian. "Almost literally. They used to just say, 'When we shout action, go for it!', and it could be a sort of frenzied mess. But between the actors there was always an instinct to check in with each other," she first divulged.
"There was a scene in a brothel with a woman and she was so exposed that we talked together about where the camera would be and what she was happy with," she added. "A director might say, 'Bit of boob biting, then slap her bum and go!', but I'd always talk it through with the other actor."
During the interview, the Miss Taylor depicter in "Emma." also recalled her sex scene with Alfie Allen. In an episode during the show's second season, her character and her on-screen brother Theon Grejoy engage in a sexually-charged moment while riding a horse together, making it one of TV's most talked-about sex-scenes.
"Alfie was very much, 'Is this okay? How are we going to make this work?' " the English comedienne recounted. "With intimacy directors, it's choreography - you move there, I move there, and permission and consent is given before you start. It is a step in the right direction."
Gemma previously addressed her infamous horse-riding scene when appearing on "The Graham Norton Show" back in 2017. Noting that it's actually her audition scene, she told the host, "I had to do it on a chair, looking straight ahead, very very dramatically with this one casting director in the room and this very ashamed cameraman."
