'Star Trek' Star Joanne Linville Dies at 93

The actress, best known for her portrayal of Romulan commander on the sci-fi TV series, is survived by her actor/director ex-husband Mark Rydell and their two children.

AceShowbiz - Joanne Linville has died. The actress, who was best known for her portrayal of Romulan commander in an episode of "Star Trek", reportedly passed away at the age of 93 on Sunday, June 20 in Los Angeles.

Confirming Joanne's death was her actress daughter Amy Rydell on Monday, June 21. Making use of Instagram, Amy shared a picture of her and her late mother smiling on the camera. She captioned the snap, "Yesterday we lost one of the greats, my mother Joanne Linville."

"I can't even begin to put into words how much I loved her and she loved me. We told each other many times each day when we spoke. She was an inspiration to me and so many others. She was truly a gem," she added. "RIP mom. I love you with alllll my heart. #romulancommander #startrek #mom."

Also announcing the sad news was Joanne's agent. "[Joanne] lived a full life," so read the statement released to Variety. "One whose spirit, passion for art and life was an inspiration to all who had the pleasure of knowing her."

In the wake of Joanne's passing, television and film producer Mark A. Altman offered a tribute to her on Twitter. "Saddened to hear about the passing of the great #JoanneLinville. Perhaps the best thing about #StarTrek's third season," he penned. "Commander of not one, but three Roman flagships and custodian of the cloaking device and, for a time, Mr. Spock's heart."

Aside from her appearance on "Star Trek", Joanne was known for starring in the "Twilight Zone" episode titled "The Passersby". Her other TV credits included, "Studio One", "Alfred Hitchcock Presents", "Route 66", "Hawaii Five-O", "Gunsmoke", "Columbo", "L.A. Law" and "Charlie's Angels".

Joanne, who was born on January 15, 1928 in Bakersfield, California, also worked in films such as "Scorpio" (1973) and "The Seduction'' (1982). She also landed a role in "A Star Is Born" (1976) starring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson.

Joanne was survived by her actor/director ex-husband Mark Rydell, their kids Amy and Christopher Rydell, her grandchildren Austen, Ruby and Ginger as well as great-grandson Kingston Fisher Lourd Rydell.
