The 'Bombshell' star admits she put up walls to protect herself because of her own fear, while the 'Venom' actor confesses he got overwhelmed by the pressures that came with his role.

AceShowbiz - Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy have finally opened up about reports of a feud between them on the set of "Mad Max: Fury Road", admitting they both could have done more to be better castmates.

The two A-listers famously fell out while making the 2015 film, but they've never really addressed the drama behind the scenes - until now.

In a New York Times piece, both stars reveal on-set challenges and delays in production turned them against each other.

"In retrospect, I didn't have enough empathy to really, truly understand what he must have felt like to step into (original "Mad Max" star) Mel Gibson's shoes," Charlize told the publication. "That is frightening!".

"I think because of my own fear, we were putting up walls to protect ourselves instead of saying to each other, 'This is scary for you, and it's scary for me, too. Let's be nice to each other.' In a weird way, we were functioning like our characters: Everything was about survival."

Theron also confessed she was "incredibly scared" because she had never made a film like Fury Road: "I think the hardest thing between me and (director) George (Miller) is that he had the movie in his head and I was so desperate to understand it."

For his part, Hardy admits there was so much pressure on him he couldn't think straight.

"I was in over my head in many ways," he said. "The pressure on both of us was overwhelming at times. What she needed was a better, perhaps more experienced, partner in me. That's something that can't be faked. I'd like to think that now that I'm older and uglier, I could rise to that occasion."

The former co-stars' candour comes amid reports Miller is planning another "Mad Max" blockbuster and a possible spin-off, starring Anya Taylor-Joy as a younger version of Charlize's character, Furiosa.

Meanwhile, Hardy has revealed there are plans for him to star in another two "Mad Max" films and Theron has stated she'd return for another film if Miller directs.
