The actor who plays the Merc with a Mouth gives a hilarious expletive-laden message to Joaquin Phoenix and Todd Phillips after their superhero movie beat his.

AceShowbiz - Ryan Reynolds has sent a tongue-in-cheek congratulatory message to Joaquin Phoenix and his "Joker" director Todd Phillips after their film beat "Deadpool" to become the highest-grossing R-rated film worldwide.

Reynolds helped to set the record with the first "Deadpool" movie in 2016, when it banked a total of $783 million globally, and set the bar even higher last year with the Marvel sequel, which grossed $785 million.

However, the title has since been stolen by Joker, as it has already amassed $788 million as the film heads into its fourth weekend on release.

To mark the occasion, Reynolds has taken to Instagram to share an edited version of the DC Comics movie's poster, featuring Phoenix in costume dancing atop a flight of stairs.

Words above the Joker's head read: "You motherf**ker".

"R-Rated box office congratulatory posts aren't like the ones you're used to...," Reynolds quips in the accompanying caption.

Joker is expected to cross the $800 million milestone this weekend. If it does, it will become the first R-rated film to achieve the feat.
