The 'Jumanji: The Next Level' actor gives an update on the long-awaited DC movie, almost 13 years after he signed up to play the famous Shazam villain.

AceShowbiz - Black Adam is finally going to see the light of day after a big-screen adaptation of the DC character has been in development at Warner Bros. for years. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, who has been long attached to play the villainous character, has excited fans after revealing a production date for the movie.

On Friday, October 18, the wrestler-turned-actor reacted to a fan and sculptor who shared his art piece. "I was so excited for @therock to Play Black Adam that I sculpted a 1/5 figure of him with Likeness," so the artist, named Amir Anbarestani, posted on Twitter and Instagram along with a picture of him with his artwork.

Flattered, Johnson replied, "Very cool man, thank you. Amazing detail. This project has been with me for over 10yrs." He went on revealing that "production begins this July," before telling the fan, "Appreciate the support."

Johnson first signed up to play Black Adam in early 2000s, when a Shazam! live-action feature film was in development at New Line Cinema. However, the film was shelved and left unproduced in 2009. After the success of DC's "Man of Steel", Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema resurrected the project.

The "Shazam!" movie starring Zachary Levi as the title character was released in April 2019, but Black Adam did not appear in the film. Instead, it had been announced in 2017 that Black Adam would get his own solo movie. Jaume Collet-Serra was then tapped to serve as director for "Black Adam" in June of this year.

With the 2020 start date, it's possible that the movie will arrive in theaters in 2021. Johnson will also serve as one of the producers on "Black Adam" alongside Hiram Garcia through their Seven Bucks Productions. Other details, including the screenwriter and other cast members, are currently unknown.

Garcia previously explained why they decided to split Shazam and Black Adam into two separate movies. "So as we were developing an actual Black Adam and Shazam movie, we were just realizing that both characters are so special that we didn't want to compromise either of them by cramming them both into the same movie," he said in 2018. "So that's why we made the decision to let Shazam have his own standalone movie and kind of launch him properly, and then we'll do the same for Black Adam. And so that kind of really freed things up. It allowed us to develop the right version of both."
