Rich was 19 when he made "Straight Out of Brooklyn" for just $450,000 (GBP344,000).The movie became an indie sensation, winning the Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature.

Rich moved to Paris, France to focus on video game creation after his 1994 drama "The Inkwell" failed to set cinemas alight. He hasn't made a film since.
