Aside from addressing her final day at the White House, the former First Lady also talks to host Jimmy Fallon about going to marriage counselling sessions with husband Barack Obama.

AceShowbiz - Michelle Obama has finally divulged what she was thinking when she left the White House.

The former U.S. First Lady made an appearance on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" on Tuesday night, December 18 to promote her best-selling memoir "Becoming", which was released last month.

During the interview, host Jimmy Fallon asked Michelle what was going through her mind when she stepped onto Air Force One with her husband President Barack Obama on the day current President Donald Trump was inaugurated in January 2017.

"Bye, Felicia," she recalled, referring to the dismissive term famously used in a scene in 1995 comedy movie "Friday". "A lot was going on that day. That was a day."

Michelle then explained how stressful the final day at the White House was, with her daughters Malia, 20, and Sasha, 17, insisting on having a sleepover with friends and new First Lady Melania Trump presenting her with an unexpected gift from Tiffany & Co.

In addition, the former lawyer opened up about how she and her husband have had counselling sessions at times during their marriage, and hopes that by discussing the topic, she can encourage other couples to do the same.

"I want young people to know that marriage is work, even the best marriages require work. I was one of those wives who thought, 'I'm taking you to marriage counselling so you can be fixed, Barack Obama,'" the 54-year-old smiled. "Because I was like, 'I'm perfect.' I was like, 'Dr. X. please fix him.' "

"And then our counsellor looked over at me. I was like, 'What are you looking at? I'm perfect.' "

"Marriage counselling was a turning point for me understanding that it wasn't up to my husband to make me happy... That I had to learn how to fill myself up and have to put myself higher on my priority list."
