AceShowbiz - Rapper/actor Common has signed on to executive produce a docuseries about the upcoming mayoral race in his hometown of Chicago, Illinois.

The "Glory" hitmaker will develop the "Chicago/2019" docuseries, focusing on the diverse candidates running for office in what is shaping up to be a historic election for the city in February (19).

Candidate Amara Enyia could potentially become Chicago's first black female mayor, Lori Lightfoot is fighting to become the first openly gay mayor, and Gery Chico is campaigning to be voted in as the first Latino mayor.

"Chicago/2019" will run in real time up until the election.

"Chicago is a city that has my heart," Common says. "It is a place that has shaped and informed who I am. Anytime I get to be a part of stories that revolve around Chicago, I get sparked. This show is especially important to me because it has the chance to influence the city's future."

"We all know the city has had its trials and tough times, but I believe in a better Chicago and better days for the people of Chicago," he adds. "I'm happy that this show can contribute to its healing and rebuilding by giving the truth and letting the people take it from there."

Common isn't the only Chicago native with a keen interest in the election - Enyia has already won the support of Chance The Rapper and Kanye West, who donated $126,460 (£100,500) to her campaign and attended one of her rallies in the city in October.
