AceShowbiz - Singers Kelly Rowland has signed up to play soul icon Gladys Knight on TV series "American Soul".

The new drama, which will air on American network BET, centres on the rise of 1970s music show "Soul Train".

Gladys Knight was one of the first performers to appear on the series, and TV bosses wanted someone with a music and acting pedigree to play the star.

In addition to acting, Rowland will also record an original version of Knight's classic "Midnight Train to Georgia", according to Billboard.
