AceShowbiz - Former ER star Vanessa Marquez has been shot and killed by police officers in Pasadena, California during a routine welfare check.

A spokesman for the Los Angeles Sheriff's homicide bureau has revealed the actress pointed a handgun at cops, who responded to an alert from her landlord after he called to report a woman in trouble.

Officers claim Marquez was suffering from medical issues an was "gravely disabled".

"There was an LA County mental health clinician here with the officers," Lieutenant Joe Mendoza said during a press conference on Thursday, August 30. "They began to communicate with her, she became very unco-operative and during that contact she armed herself with a handgun, she pointed it at the officers and an officer-involved shooting occurred."

Marquez was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

The actress portrayed nurse Wendy Goldman on ER from 1994 to 1997. Her other credits include Seinfeld, Melrose Place, and the film Stand And Deliver. Her most recent TV credit was in 2001 TV movie Fire & Ice.

She made headlines last year (17) after accusing her former ER castmate George Clooney of stalling her career after she reported harassment on the set of the series.

Clooney released a statement at the time, which read: "I had no idea Vanessa was blacklisted. I take her at her word. I was not a writer or a producer or a director on that show. I had nothing to do with casting. I was an actor and only an actor. If she was told I was involved in any decision about her career, then she was lied to.

"The fact that I couldn't affect her career is only surpassed by the fact that I wouldn't."
